Considerations about electroretinography in dogs Ciência Rural
Oriá,Arianne Pontes; Lázaro Júnior,Luiz Paulo; Honsho,Cristiane dos Santos; Dórea Neto,Francisco de Assis; Laus,José Luiz.
Electroretinography is a technique used for the objective assessment of retinal function and is useful as an auxiliary diagnostic tool for various ophthalmopathies. We report here information about the indications, components and measurements of the electroretinogram (ERG) and about the flash ERG technique illustrated by the Classic/Standard protocol used in the Ophthalmology Unit of the “Governador Laudo Natel” Veterinary Hospital, Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, State University of São Paulo (UNESP), Jaboticabal Campus.

Corneal sensitivity in five horse breeds Ciência Rural
Andrade,Eunice Santos de; Vieira,João Victor Romano; Gomes Júnior,Deusdete Conceição; Raposo,Ana Claúdia Santos; Galera,Paula Diniz; Oriá,Arianne Pontes.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine and compare corneal sensitivity values in different regions of the cornea in five horse breeds. One hundred and forty five healthy horses, adults of both sexes, of the following breeds - Arabian horse (AH; n=20), Mangalarga Marchador (MM; n=50), Pure Blood Lusitano (PBL; n=35), Quarter Horse (QH; n=20), Brazilian Sport Horse (BSH; n=20)-were investigated. Corneal touch threshold (CTT) was measured with a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer in five different corneal regions. Measurements of the median central CTT were: 4.50±0.50cm (AH), 3.50±0.56cm (MM), 3.00±0.25cm (PBL), 2.50±0.44cm (QH) and 2.50±0.00cm (BSH). The central region was the most sensitive and the dorsal region the least sensitive corneal region for all breeds....

Feline corneal sequestration Ciência Rural
Oriá,Arianne Pontes; Soares,Ana Maria Barros; Laus,José Luiz; Dórea Neto,Francisco de Assis.
Corneal sequestration is a disease unique to domestic cats, clinically characterized by chronicity; signs of ocular pain with the development of a dark brown to black, opaque, oval, paracentral or central corneal plaque. The purpose of this review article was to approach and discuss about the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of the corneal sequestrum.

Tear meniscometry test in wild animals Ciência Rural
Oriá,Arianne Pontes; Raposo,Ana Cláudia Santos; Brito,Vinícius José da Silva Cardoso de; Araújo,Nayone Lima Lantyer Cordeiro de; Oliveira,Maria Madalena Souza; Albuquerque,Isaac Manoel Barros.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to describe strip meniscometry test values for Amazona aestiva (turquoise-fronted amazon), Ara ararauna (blue-and-yellow macaw) and Caiman latirostris (broad-snouted caiman). Twenty-one Amazona aestiva and 11 Ara ararauna, healthy, adults of unknown sex, and 37 healthy adult Caiman latirostris (27 males and 10 females), were used in this investigation. All animals were manually restrained and I-Tear® Test strip was inserted for 5 s at the edge of the lower tear meniscus, without touching the eyelid or ocular surface, immediately followed by measurement (millimeter per 5 seconds). No differences were reported between left and right eyes for Amazona aestiva (P = 0.824), Ara ararauna (P = 0.262) and Caiman latirostris (P = 0.679)....

The organization of flash electroretinography unit in Veterinary Medicine Ciência Rural
Honsho,Cristiane dos Santos; Oriá,Arianne Pontes; Lazaro Júnior,Luiz Paulo da Veiga Monteiro; Dorea Neto,Francisco; Laus,José Luiz.
Electroretinography is the technique that allows the evaluation of changes in electrical potential that occur when the eye is stimulated by light. Such changes reflect the response of several retinal cells including photoreceptors (cones and rods). Thus it evaluates the retinal functionality and can diagnose abnormalities in retinas seem to be normal by ophthalmoscopy. Due to the constant evolution in veterinary ophthalmology, new centers of retinal electrophysiology have been introduced around the world either for early diagnosis of retinopathies or for preoperative evaluation of animals with cataracts and glaucoma, as well as for continuing research. The Ophthalmology Unit of the "Governador Laudo Natel" Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in the Faculty of...

Use of methyl methacrylate, moulded in its paste phase, to fill the orbital cavity of dogs, after exenteration in cases of ophthalmic neoplasias: a report of three cases Ciência Rural
Talieri,Ivia Carmem; Buquera,Luiz Eduardo Carvalho; Oriá,Arianne Pontes; Brunelli,Adriana Torrecilhas Jorge; Almeida,Denise Eliza de; Laus,José Luiz.
Methyl methacrylate, acrylic resine for odontologic use, was used to fill the orbital cavity of three dogs which presented retrobulbar, eyeball and eyelid neoplasias extended to the orbital space, respectively. The material was moulded in the orbit before polymerization, while still in its paste phase. In each case, follow-up reports were obtained in the 10th and 40th days and in 18 months after surgery. Complications were not observed and improvement of cosmetic appearance was obtained.
